Okay, so you are finally tired of those slow dial-up internet connections, and you want to go broadband. Good deal. But first, you may be wondering which type of broadband connection is best- DSL or Cable? Or, at least, which of the two gives you more speed for the price? Here we take a look at these two popular broadband connections and try to determine which one is better: DSL vs. Cable.

Cable Speed vs. DSL

The most common question that comes up is which type of connection is faster, DSL or Cable? To answer this, it is important to compare both upload and download speeds. Now, so you have something to compare these speeds to, your average dial-up connection is about 28 - 56 Kbps. Most often, however, you won't be able to get 56k through dial up, as most services can not handle this speed.

The average speed of a DSL download is 1.0 - 1.5Mbps. That's megabytes per second - about 20 times as fast as the fastest dial-up connection. This is fast, but consider Cable, which can give you up to 2 - 3Mbps. Thus, at least for downloading, cable can give you almost twice the speed of DSL - that's impressive. On the upload side, however, cable and DSL are pretty evenly matched. They both provide about 100Kbps - 400Kbps. It seems that cable has won this battle.

What about Price and Quality of Service?

There is more to discuss here besides the speed of the connections. Take price for one. Cable and DSL connections are both going to be more expensive than dial-up. But, DSL seems to be the cheaper of the two at the moment. You can get a good DSL internet connection for about $35 - $45 per month. Cable modem will cost you about $45 or $50 (this price may be included in a cable TV package). These prices, however, are really close and they change almost from month to month.

DSL is nice because you can talk on the phone and be online at the same time. In addition, business-level DSL service provides guaranteed data rates, so your connection speed is never a surprise. On the other hand, DSL speed tends to decrease the further you are away from the data center, and it is typically not as widely available as Cable. Cable speeds are not dependent on distance from the data center, and is occasionally cheaper than DSL when included in a cable TV rate. A cable modem, however, may require costly professional installation, and there may exists some limitations on downloads and uploads. All of these factors should be taken into consideration when choosing either broadband service.

There has been a lot written about the speed of broadband connections, but for most users it takes a back seat to just getting the work done. With the debate on whether there is a justified need for money to be spent on high-speed fibre networks still raging, is it really all about connection speed?

According to a recent survey, some 21 million Brits (or around 63% of those online) visited sites related to multimedia - including TV, movie and video sites - and services such as YouTube and BBC iPlayer have seen increases in visitors as internet habits change constantly.

Gone are the days when hopping online used to be just to check e-mails and do a bit of surfing - with most of the traffic online now pointing towards video-dominated applications and social networking sites. Virtual worlds such as Second Life are also evolving, and a faster connection would allow for HD 2-way video conferencing - paving the way for events such as concerts and other performances to take place in a virtual setting.

But whilst faster broadband would seem to benefit online gamers, the demand for more bandwidth from the general population is still low, and there are still issues to be solved with regards to the existing broadband infrastructure. The fluctuating 'supply and demand' factor of broadband means companies such as BT face a 'chicken and egg' dilemma about whether to invest billions in developing newer and faster networks.

In countries like South Korea - which is often regarded as being the most technically advanced nation when it comes to broadband - with customers in the cities enjoying average speeds of between 50 to 100Mbps (Megabits per second) - consider that a typical 5 minute music file takes roughly one and a half minutes to download on a 512K connection, where as in direct comparison - on an 8Mbps connection the download would be instantaneous.

Online gaming in Korea is very popular, and with cheap broadband services offering high bandwidth and fast download speeds, which in turn leads to faster upload speeds - a must for professional gamers.

Television is also changing, broadband providers now offering a range of services to stream signals down our phone lines and provide us with internet, phone and television down the same line. Cruise Terminal Adventures - Norwegian Star Review

We scheduled a repositioning cruise on the Vision of the Seas from Los Angeles to Vancouver, BC and I had checked the website and found that NCL was offering a one-night Dinner & Dance cruise from Vancouver, BC to Seattle, WA for an unbelievable rate in a Balcony Cabin. Score!

This trip proved to be an adventure for a one-nighter. I am going to try and keep a light tone to this review but it was nasty, as several thousand cruisers can attest to.

We disembarked from the Vision of the Seas at the Balentine Cruise Terminal and waited 40 minutes for a taxi with several new friends that we made on the Vision and then took 45 minutes for what should have been a 5 minute taxi ride to Canada Place Cruise Terminal. Traffic through the city was horrendous. While we were driving through the Gastown there was a gentleman dragging a suitcase whose rollers had broken down the street, we initially passed him however while we were sitting on the street watching the traffic basically go nowhere he passed us and finally disappeared, if we did not have all the luggage we did it was quite obvious that walking was much faster than driving. We should have realized at this point that we were in deep do-do.

We arrived at Canada Place Cruise Terminal, checked our bags, and found a line of around 1,000 people. We were trying to figure out whether this was our line or the line for one of the other ships when we found a Port employee and were told that all ships went through the same line, we were then informed that we could not get in line and had to wait an hour or two because our ship had arrived late. We should have realized that this was the second sign of cruise terminal hell on earth.

We headed out of Canada Place foraging for food and coffee and found a food court across the street where we wrestled a black bear for a table and set ourselves with some natural Canadian Mexican food to wait out our hour delay.

An hour later we wandered back to madness. Think I'm kidding? I'm not. We took the underground tunnel into Canada Place and found the route via Elevator to the Cruise Terminal. The doors of the elevator opened and we found ourselves in the middle of an even longer line. I don't like line cutters myself, so we followed the line, over the river, through the woods, up the hill, over the dale, around the corner, in front of the hotel, up the steps, down the walkway, to the front of one of the ships. If you have never been to Canada Place imagine a huge building, bigger then some sports stadiums, long enough that two of the large cruise ships can park right next to it, one in front of the other and you can get an idea of how long this line was. I would guess that there were a good 4,000 people in front of us in line at this point.

Needless to say, people were getting testy and annoyed; we literally stood in one spot for almost an hour. I may have been imagining this, but at one point I believe the line started doing the "can can" and a conga line formed as well, at least I think it did, until I clicked my red heels together and wished to go home and found myself standing in line again. Finally the line started moving again and about 3 hours later we were ushered down a stairway into the 2nd basement level. Comments about dungeons abounded and several people in line thought it may be possible that we were being led to the bottom of the ships to row or shovel coal.

At this point thing started moving quickly, we were rushed through security, the line moved briskly through customs, enough that we felt a breeze, and we were finally to the cruise line desk, got our door keys and was directed to the ship.

NCL is very conscious of the possible health issues on the ship as we were required to clean our hands with hand cleanser before we could board the ship.

We got to our cabin and our bags were already there, they had been partying for some time, the garment bag asked us where we had been and did we have any vodka with us. The carpet bag was balancing on a rail trying to be a tight line walker; fortunately it did have good balance.

We found our swimsuits and hobbled to the elevator for a quick trip to deck 12 and the blissful relaxation of the hot tubs. When we got to the pool deck we were amazed by how large the ship really was with a nice large pool with 2 water slides and 4 hot tubs. The outside diner was active and the food smelled great.

After soaking in the hot tubs we went back to our cabin and placed reservation for dinner then wandered the ship for a bit, it really was a nice ship. We then headed to the main showroom for the production show "Cirque Pacific".

"Cirque Pacific" was like most Cirque shows, best enjoyed when you are under the influence of something. Fortunately I did have some pharmaceuticals with me, too bad they were in my cabin. The show started with an announcement that smoking was not permitted in the auditorium, then them filled it with smoke, I know, show smoke, but still. I suspect that the smoke was a symbol of the state the director and choreographer where in when they put the show together; I seriously suspect they had smoked some happy grass beforehand. I had never seen hula girls doing river dance, women in blenders, and a character that looked like it belonged in "Tron" being representative of things from the Pacific region, but there they were. In reality the show was interesting and had some good high points and some of the performers were terrific, but Tarzan boy was just a little over the top. *winks*

We had Dinner in the "Endless Summer" restaurant, which was TexMex cuisine, it was as good as any TexMex restaurant that we had eaten at previously, with good flavor and plentiful portions.

We then went to the Casino, where we did what most people do, which is donate. But it was run professionally and while it was only open for a short time it was a good place to play.

Finally we decided to hit the rack. A little disappointed how difficult it was to get ice as none was left in the cabin and no steward returned our calls.

The next morning we had breakfast in the main buffet and it was about normal buffet fare. All guests on the ship were expedited departure, which meant we had to carry a weeks' worth of luggage off the ship ourselves, but we did get off quickly and were outside in Seattle in a matter of minutes.

While this was only a single day exposure to NCL it was a positive exposure with the exception of the madness at Canada Place. So hopefully we will be on one of their ships again in the future.

How To Fix Your Broken Ipod

There are basically two types of iPod malfunctions; hardware based and software based. Identifying which your iPod is suffering from can sometimes be a complicated task but there are a few things you can look for.

Hardware problems are most commonly due to a hard drive failure. Just as with a computer the hard drive inside the iPod is very delicate and being constantly shaken the connectors inside can come loose. The most common tell of an iPod hard drive malfunction is a clicking sound, or a high pitched spinning sound. If your iPod is showing these symptoms there isn't much that can be done besides replacing the hard drive. Replacing an iPod hard drive can be a very delicate task which I highly advise you against attempting. Taking apart the iPod can result in short circuiting the main board or breaking the delicate connectors. In any case for the price of an iPod hard drive you can get yourself a second hand iPod and save yourself the hassle.

The other common iPod hardware malfunction is due to water damage. If your iPod was exposed to water whether it was the rain or it was dropped in the toilet the chances of survival are minimal. The first thing you should do is put it on a dry towel and leave it in a warm area for at least 48 hours. If after 48 hours your iPod still does not turn on it is beyond repairable. Water damage is not covered under warranty either, so again your best option will simply be to purchase a new iPod or get a used one on eBay.

Software errors are most commonly identified by a warning error on the iPod screen preventing you from successfully starting the iPod. If you iPod constantly resets itself it can also be a sign of a software malfunction.

The first thing you should try is to reset the iPod. Turn the 'hold' switch on and off and then hold the play and menu buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds. You will see the Apple logo signifying the iPod is resetting itself. If the warning sign is still there you can attempt a factory reset.

The factory reset will erase everything on the iPod and attempt to restore the factory settings. To do this you must connect your iPod to the computer and open iTunes. Click on the iPod logo and look for the option 'restore'. The process can take a few minutes.

If a factory restore does not fix your iPod, it is probably due to a hardware failure. Determining what type of error can be complicated and would require opening the iPod. If it is under warranty take it to a certified Apple technician, if not once again consider buying a new iPod.

Most folks want that laptop for work, school, or college. Most laptops these days are Wi-Fi enabled. That means that they have the wireless hardware and software built into the computer. To the average consumer, wireless is a form of magic. You turn it on and it works, right? Not always. Understanding the basics to wireless will help avoid frustration and headaches.

First, before we get into the basics of wireless networking, I have a few opinions to express.

It seems that everybody wants to go wireless with their laptops and desktop PCs. Wireless for laptops makes sense, since they get moved around between work and home and points in between. You can always connect using the Wi-Fi network at work or steal bandwidth from someone else. There are hotspots all over. There are ethical questions involved with borrowing?your neighbors signal. Let your conscience be your guide.

Wireless for desktops is an open subject. Since most of us usually set our desktops up on our home or office workstations, they tend not to move around. The only benefit of having a wireless desktop is that you dont have the expense and trouble of running Ethernet cable around your house. If you are not a DYIer, an Ethernet cable installation is an extra outlay. If youre lucky, your present PC is only a few feet away from your Broadband Modem. I personally prefer to have all my stationary PCs hooked up with Cat 5 Ethernet cables. That way I dont load up the wireless bandwidth on the router. Well talk more on bandwidth later.

There are hardware requirements to wireless networking. These are the things you need to communicate.

At home you need:

(1) a Broadband internet connection (Cable or DSL modem),
(2) a router to broadcast the wireless signal,
(3) a wireless enabled computer.

You cannot set up a wireless network using a Dial-Up connection. Period. I recommend that you power off your Broadband Modem and any existing computer systems before you begin the installation of the wireless router. The computing equipment will start to negotiate with your router automatically on start up. This will get you on the network without confusion. The router and existing PCs should not need any further configuration. The default or current settings should work. Your PC should already be set to DHCP in your Network Connections TCP/IP properties window. If it werent you would not have been able to connect to your ISP. This is a default setting of your PC.

The Broadband internet connection gear should already be present. Thats the Cable or DSL Modem that your Internet Service Provider installed when you got their service. Its connected to the Cable or DSL filter connection coming from your wall. The Modem has two connectors as a rule. One for the Cable or DSL data into the Modem, and one RJ45 connector you probably have connected to the computer you have in service now.

Youll need to unplug the Ethernet cable between the computer and the Modem. Reconnect that cable to your wireless router. It goes into a RJ45 connector usually labeled WAN?for Wide Area Network. The only other connection you will need to make is to connect another Ethernet cable between from one of the wired ports on the back of the router to your PC. There are usually 4 of them. Any one will do to reconnect your existing PC so its on the network. The existing PC will get its internet connection through this port. Your routers default settings should allow you to start connecting to your Wi-Fi enabled computers.

If all the cables are correctly placed, you should now be able to get on the Internet from you existing computers and your wireless computers.

Some quick notes of interest:

(A) Your Wi-Fi router is transmitting and receiving in the 2.4MHZ range. So are your Wi-Fi enabled computers. This is the same frequency range of a number of cordless telephones. You may have interference on your cordless phones once the Wi-Fi network is installed. If this occurs youll need to get 5.8 MHZ phones or put up with the noise.
(B) One of the most common questions I get is ?strong>I bought a wireless laptop and I cant get on the internet. Why not??If your wireless router is installed properly, then your wireless laptop may need configuration. Go to your Network Places or Network Neighborhood for a wizard to help you set up your computer for wireless.
(C) Bandwidth is the volume of traffic you can sustain through your network. The more devices using the Wi-Fi network, the slower the network uploads/downloads will be.

Remember, your wireless network works a lot like your cordless phone system. You need a transmitter/receiver at each end. Think of the router as the base station and the wireless PC as the handset. You cant talk on your cordless phone if the base station is unplugged. So without a wireless router in service, you cant communicate with the Internet. Hotspots are just spillover signal from someones wireless router.

The biggest issue I wanted to address when setting up the wireless network is that Streamyx security. I have always been skeptical of wireless security, but since I have purchased a laptop, I decided to give wireless networking a try.

Administrative Credentials - Important

Turn off SSID Broadcast - Not Important
This is a debatable option with regards to a wireless connection. Many people would argue that not broadcasting your SSID will help with security. My opinion is that it won't really provide security. Those who you are trying to gain access to your wireless network can easily determine your SSID, whether it is broadcast or not. I have also had problems with connecting to a wireless network when the SSID is not broadcasted, so I leave my setting on broadcast.

Using MAC Filtering - Not Important
Similar to broadcasting the router's SSID, this is also a debatable point.
